Ok let get this squared and out of the way. This is not an authentic reproduction of a railroad lantern of which there were many styles used back then. Its more like to a warning lantern used my road crews before there was such a thing as yellow flashing hazard beacons or even safety cones. That being said it really doesn't matter anyway. If you're looking for something that has an atiquaited look to it then this will do just fine IF you want to spend this kind of money.
It is made in chine of course. Unlike Japan having all the best quality stuff coming from her.......China doesn't seem to care so much about quality.
They did a nice job of rusticating the TIN in that it's actually rusted so much that pits are formed giving it the old cast iron look to it. They must have given it a lengthy sodium chloride bath and just left it at that and did nothing else.
Upon opening wear some kind of gloves if you don't want rust dust on your hands because like I said....the Chinese did not care to much about quality. But if you're not too concerned about rust dust and have the gumption to take it to the next level then open the box and remove the lantern.
Then take some lamp oil and get a rag good and damp with it and wipe it down till no more dust remains. Let it dry out over night and your lamp will actually take on a more true cast iron appearance that has seen its years of abuse and kerosene soaked nights.
I've got mine burning right now very low flame and its very appealing. But there are a couple of points I'd like you to be made aware of before you buy.
1. The filler cap was rusted on pretty good and took a pair of pliers to break it free. No big deal except there should be a gasket there under the cap. Cork would probably do ok, or even one from the garden hose. Hence without that gasket in place and even with a half a tank of oil in place, should you slosh this around you won't have any problem in seeing oil leak out.
2. Folks its made of tin not cast iron. Of course to keep cost down this is preferable in the antiquing process in order for rust to form. However the frame or the 2 outside tubes that go from the top and outside then down to the base have an issue. At the base where they meet the tank.....well mine wasn't exactly connected correctly though you cannot see it at all so it hardly an eyesore.....but its just enough so that if I slosh the oil in the tank around........it leaks. Since I'm a bit of a handyman I can easily fix that issue.
3. The lever that raised the burn plate and glass to expose the wick has been rusticated too and well...like any rusted part it is a bit stiff at first.
4. How in the world do you remove the glass to clean all these paw prints off it??
Bottom line.....worth the money? Depends on you and what you want. If you want a non functioning antique looking piece to accent and empty spot on top of or near that 1890's roll top desk you might find it worth the money. If you clean it up that way I suggested you will no doubt have a fine conversation piece for anyone (thats most people) who don't know what a real railroad lantern looks like.
If you want to have this as a functioning piece then keep it out of arms reach of the kids for one thing. For the other thing I strongly advise 1/3 of a tank of oil MAX and keep it in a place where its visable but stable. Out of the way of people and pet traffic. It looks really nice lit up on a low flame.
Knowing all this would I buy another one? Tough question. I don't mind lite fixer uppers. But I mind a little bit, spending this kind of money on something I think someone else could designed a little bit better and have easily avoided in the first place.
A non functioning piece......yes I would buy again.
A functioning piece? Oh....I'm so iffy on that. Safety concerns have me second guessing myself.
Hope this helps in your decision to buy or not to buy.
